Tango Tourism

Several tango dancers are dancing outdoor Mykonos with Mykonos Windmills in the background.

People are travelling around much more than years ago. We quite regularly go to dance in Montreal and sometime in Toronto or Ottawa. While travelling (and we love to travel), we discovered somewhat to our surprise that tango is very popular all over the world. Perhaps such an ease of travelling helps to promote tango, and creates opportunity to dance in many interesting places. It is true that Buenos Aires is the capital of tango, but one can look at Montreal and Berlin as its regional satellites in North America and Europe. I use the term “Capital” as a tribute to the historical roots of tango right there but also for the multitude of opportunities to dance tango over there every night of the week. Tango dancing has become so popular that many large or even the small places, like Kingston, have their Tango clubs.

One can plan quite interesting tours to many destinations that could accommodate dancing tango. With some research and planning one can end up dancing during vacations, while visiting family, and even during business trips. At one point, our tango tourism also included cruising. These were the so-called tango cruises. We sailed along with other 20 or so tango enthusiasts and a pair of maestros. Wow, these were high-intensity voyages. We had tango classes in the mornings, then land excursions, and finally night milongas back on board. The port city excursions always involved dancing at afternoon milonga with local tango communities. Sometimes, we could also dance at some landmarks in our itinerary.

From time to time, we like to participate in larger tango events, in so-called Festivals. These usually take place over several days and include classes, shows, orchestras, and dancing. Some festivals are quite large and involve thousands of participants but many are smaller with several hundred guests. Interestingly majority of people that attend these tango festivals are quite young and with great talent for dancing with passion.
